What do the icons on the resource pages mean?

The iCivics website features icons on resource pages and the “teach” page. These display what our resources offer at-a-glance. The icons can quickly give you information about:

1. Grade Level: Easily search for middle or high school resources
2. Pedagogy: We call these “Tags”. Think strategies and modes of learning, such as “inquiry-based”, “ELL”, and cross-curricular connections.
3. Technology Requirements: Whether you’re looking for no-tech or tech-specific activities, we have them at iCivics.
4. Resources: What resources are included with a lesson or game? Icons like “PDF” and “PPT” can tell you. Icons also note when a lesson includes a Nearpod, Kahoot, or interactive Google Slides deck. 

Here's the full list of icons and what each means:

High School		Resources designed for use at the high school grade level.
Middle School		Resources designed for use at the middle school grade level.
Pedagogy (Tags)
Assessment		Resources that include assessments. This may include quizzes or instructions in the resource’s teacher's guide.
ELA/Literacy		Resources that support literacy.
ELL/MLL		Resources with support for English Learners (ELs) and Multilingual Learners (MLs).
Game Extension		Resources designed to be used in conjunction with an iCivics game.
Group Work		Resources with activities built for group work.
History Connection		Resources that connect to history.
Inquiry-based		Resources that center an inquiry-based approach to learning.
Mini-Lesson		Short lessons that may not require an entire class period to complete.
Primary Source		Resources that utilize primary sources.
Printable Game		A game that can be printed for play.
Project-based		Resources that include project-based learning (PBL) activities and instructional approaches.
Role-play		Resources that include role-play activities.
Vocabulary		Resources that include vocabulary handouts or activities.
Writing		Resources that include writing activities.
Technology Requirements
Web browser		Resources that can be accessed using a web browser (we recommend Chrome).
Smartphone App		Resources that can be accessed using a smartphone.
Tablet/iPad App		Resources that can be accessed using a tablet. This primarily includes games that can be downloaded as apps.
No Technology Required		Resources that can be used without any technology at all. Resources with the “no technology required” icon may also include browser-based resources, but they are not integral to the learning experience.

Google Form		Resources that include a Google Form, typically a quiz, that can be copied and modified.
Google Slide		Resources that include a Google Slide deck that can be copied and modified.
Infographic		Resources that include an iCivics infographic.
Kahoot		Resources that include a Kahoot quiz that can be accessed and completed using Kahoot.com.
Kami		Resources that can be assigned using the iCivics Kami integration. Kami is a PDF reading and annotation tool with supports including a dictionary and translation. iCivics teachers do not need a Kami account to use this feature—it’s built in!
Nearpod		Resources that include a Nearpod template that can be accessed and assigned through nearpod.com.
PDF		Resources that include a downloadable PDF, such as a student handout or a teacher’s guide.
Powerpoint		Resources that include a Powerpoint deck that can be downloaded and modified.
